Michael Smith obtained a first class honours degree in mathematics from Imperial College, London, in 1976 and a doctorate in theoretical physics from Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1979. He has accumulated experience at seven UK, three American and five other European higher education institutes, generating over 150 refereed journal papers on diverse astrophysical phenomena, including Nature papers on Radio Galaxies, observations carried out by space observatories and pioneering supercomputer simulations. In 2004, he published his first book entitled the Origin of Stars. He was Faculty Director and Sub-Dean while writing his second book on Astrophysical Jets. He is now the Director of Research for SEPnet (South East England Physics Network), the Director of the University of Kent’s Centre for Astrophysics and Planetary Science, and the Director of the Kent Space School.
