Dr. Haiyan Tong is a Research Biologist (Principal Investigator) with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory, Environmental Public Health Division in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. She received her M.D. from China Medical University and her Ph.D. of Human Physiology from the University of Florida in 1998. She finished her post-doctoral training at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health. She was on faculty at Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chaple Hill, in North Carolina. She has won several national and international awards for research on environmental stress and air pollution impacts on human health. She has published over twenty high impact peer-reviewed journal papers and gave numerous invited presentations in international conferences.

Research Interest

Dr. Haiyan Tong’s research interest includes the cardiopulmonary effects of air pollution exposure in both humans and animals, and the mechanism of cardiovascular toxicity of nanoparticles and ambient air pollution particles exposure in animals. Currently, she is leading several collaborative studies to examine the cardiovascular effects of multi-pollution exposure in animals using cardiac ischemia/reperfusion model. She also examines the protective effects of dietary supplements on the adverse cardiovascular effects of air pollution exposure in human volunteers.
