Biography

Dr. Guey Chuen Perng, nick name Oscar, earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at University of California, Davis, and got his postdoc training in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC), an affiliated teaching hospital to University of California, Los Angeles. Oscar was an assistant professor at the Department of Ophthalmology at UC Irvine and served as Director of Arbovirology division at AFRIMS, an affiliated research institute to US Military in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2007, Oscar was recruited to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine as an Associate Professor at Emory University. In 2012, with his outstanding research and insightful knowledge on dengue and global vision on infectious diseases, Oscar was offered to be an affiliated faculty at the Center of Infectious Disease and Signaling Research in National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan.

Research Interest

Dr. Guey Chuen Perng research interests are to use up-to-date technology to understand the diseases induced by infectious agents. While thinking about pathogenesis of an infection, we often direct ourselves to immune cells, which perhaps could be critical in understanding of a disease development. But, these cells are originated from hematopoietic organ—bone marrow, of which what role they play in pathogenic cause of a disease remains a mystery. The research focus therefore is to dissect the effects of virus-host interactions on up and down regulation of hematopoietic progenitor cells in bone marrow and innate immune response and/or cytokine productions in pathogen infected subjects, as this could directly affect viral load in the infected organs and therefore is an important factors in the pathogenesis of virus infections.
