Biography

Dr. Charles E Egwuagu received a PhD in Epidemiology and Microbiology from Yale University Graduate School and MPH Infectious diseases from Yale School of Medicine New Haven Connecticut USA. Dr. Egwuagu then served as a Commissioned Officer of the United States Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health NIH from 1990 to 1999. He has been the Chief of the Molecular Immunology Section Laboratory of Immunology NEI since 2000. A major focus of research in Dr. Egwuagu’s laboratory is in the use of genetically modified mouse and rat strains to study molecular and cellular mechanisms, that regulate the development of CNS inflammatory diseases such as Uveitis Multiple Sclerosis and Agerelated Macular Degeneration AMD.

Research Interest

Cytokine signaling pathways and epigenetic mechanisms that regulate lymphocyte development and cell-fate decisions. The overall goal is to develop non-steroidal, cytokine-based therapy for treatment of autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases.
