Dr. Shariful Islam was born in a rural village in the southern part of Bangladesh. He has come from an extended family with a deep religious background. He has three sisters and two brothers. He is 4th in his family line up. His father was a primary school teacher and mother was a house wife. He has completed his primary education from his village school; Secondary (SSC) and Higher Secondary Education (HSC) from his own district school and passed his Intermediate with distinction. He was awarded with scholarship to study Bachelor of Medicine. He has completed his Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) from Rajshahi Medical College under Rajshahi University of Bangladesh. After completion of internship training, he joined the Department of Surgery from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University formerly known as the IPGMR (The Institute of Postgraduate study in Medicine and Research) Dhaka, Bangladesh.
He was brought to the Caribbean region by his wife’s uncle who worked as a family physician in Trinidad and Tobago. Although, he visited Trinidad for the first time, he worked for five years in Guyana and got the job in Trinidad and Tobago in the year 2003. He was first employed at the Port of Spain General Hospital in the Neurosurgical Department, there after he moved to the Orthopedic and then to the General Surgery Department. In 2008, he got admission into Postgraduate Degree (DM general surgery) at the University of West Indies. Subsequently, he moved to the San Fernando Teaching Hospital as a surgical resident and had successfully completed his Postgraduate Degree (DM general surgery) in 2015.
Since 2013, he has been working as a Surgical Registrar at the San Fernando Teaching Hospital of Trinidad and Tobago. He was elected as a member of the Society of Surgeons in Trinidad and Tobago and fellow member of the Caribbean College of Surgeons. Recently, he was elected as an executive member for the Society of the Surgeons of Trinidad and Tobago and also for South West Doctor’s Association.
