Biography :

Dr. Smith is a Microbial Ecologist at USCA where he studies microbial interactions with marine organisms. He is on the Graduate faculty in the Dept. of Marine Medicine and Environmental Studies at MUSC and the College of the Environment at USC-Columbia. He maintains a laboratory at the Center for Hydrogen Research where he screens nitrogen-fixing bacteria for their potential to produce hydrogen in fuel cells. Smith also studies diseases of corals throughout the world and is the co-chair of the Coral Disease Working Group in the World Bank’s Targeted Coral Research Program. Smith has identified pathogens associated with diseases of scleractinian corals, gorgonians, echinoderms and sponges. His research, while concentrating in the Caribbean, includes studies in the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and throughout the Pacific. He has published over 100 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals.

Biography :

George Perry is dean of the College of Sciences and professor of biology at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Perry is recognized in the field of Alzheimers disease research particularly for his work on oxidative stress. Perry received his bachelors of arts degree in zoology with high honors from University of California, Santa Barbara. After graduation, he headed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography and obtained his Ph.D. in marine biology under David Epel in 1979. He then received a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Cell Biology in the laboratories of Drs. Bill Brinkley and Joseph Bryan at Baylor College of Medicine where he laid the foundation for his observations of abnormalities in cell structures. In 1982, Perry joined the faculty of Case Western Reserve University, where he currently holds an adjunct appointment. He is distinguished as one of the top Alzheimer’s disease researchers with over 900 publications, one of the top 100 most-cited scientists in neuroscience and behavior and one of the top 25 scientists in free radical research. Perry has been cited over 42,500 times (H=103) and is recognized as an ISI highly cited researcher. Perry is editor for numerous journals and is editor-in-chief for the Journal of Alzheimers Disease. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and past-president of the American Association of Neuropathologists. He received the Distinguished Professional Mentor Award from the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native American Scientists. Most recently he has been named a Foreign Correspondent Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences. Perrys research is primarily focused on how Alzheimer disease develops and the physiological consequences of the disease at a cellular level. He is currently working to determine the sequence of events leading to damage caused by and the source of increased oxygen radicals.

Anake Kijjoa is a Professor of Chemistry and Head of Chemistry Department of the Biomedical Sciences Institute of Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto, Portugal. He received his BSc (Pharmacy) from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand in 1974. He moved to Brazil in 1976 with the scholarship from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) to pursue his PhD with Professor Otto R. Gottlieb in Natural Products Chemistry at the University of São Paulo. After gaining his PhD in 1980, he moved to Portugal and took a position of Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto. In 1984, he moved to the Biomedical Sciences Institute of Abel Salazar (ICBAS) of the same University, and in 1985 he spent three months working on Plant Cell Culture with Professor Hans Becker at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Heidelberg, Germany. In 1988, he received a post-doctoral fellowship from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Portugal to work with Professor Werner Herz at the Department of Chemistry, The Florida State University at Tallahassee, Florida, USA. In 1990, he was appointed Associate Professor at the Biomedical Sciences Institute of Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto and in 1994 he was appointed Professor of Chemistry at the same Institute. He was a member of the Marine Board - European Science Foundation (ESF) working group, and a coordinator of the ALFA (America Latina para Formacion Científica) project and the Spanish-Portuguese Network of Program X of CYTED (Fine Chemicals on pharmaceutical proposes). He is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Bangsaen Institute of Marine Science (BIMS) of Burapha University, Thailand. He is also an Adjunct Professor of the Department of Chemistry of Burapha University and the Department of Chemistry of Kasetsart University (Thailand). He received the “Thai Professional Award”, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Science and Technology Development of Thailand, from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, Office of Higher Education, NSTDA and TRF, in 2008. He was bestowed the Honorary Doctorates in Chemistry by Burapha University (Thailand) in 2008 and by Kasetsart University (Bangkok, Thailand) in 2009. He currently serves as a member of editorial board of Marine Drugs and a member of the editorial advisory board of Journal of Natural pharmaceuticals. He has supervised several Master’s and PhD’s theses in Chemistry of Bioactive Natural Products from plants, marine sponges, terrestrial and marine fungi. He is an author of more than one hundred research papers in the international peer reviewed journals, and several chapters of internationally circulated books.

Thomas J. Manning is a Professor of Chemistry at Valdosta State University. He received his PhD from Jim Winefordner the University of Florida and did a post doctoral fellowship at Florida State University with nuclear chemist Greg Choppin. His publication list includes a number of papers in marine natural products as well as high temperature plasmachemistry, environmental chemistry, optical spectroscopy and chemical education. His work in the marine environment has focused on developing a technique called pharmaceutical aquaculture or farming the ocean. Brad deYoung received a BSc in Chemistry and Physics from Memorial University in 1977, an MSc in Physical Oceanography from Memorial in 1983 and a PhD in Physical Oceanography from the University of British Columbia in 1986. He has worked in environmental consulting and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. He has been a faculty member at Memorial University since 19888 where he is a Professor and holds the Captain Robert A. Bartlett Chair in Oceanography. He is an oceanographer who has worked for more than thirty years on ocean dynamics and coastal ocean ecology. He has worked on the development of new sampling techniques, such as ocean gliders and cabled observatories, and in the coupling of biological and physical models for improving our understanding of the influence of circulation on marine organisms. He has worked on the challenges of coupling biological and physical models and in the application of oceanography to improving our ability to ocean management.

She began her academic career as Lecturer in the Laboratory of Nutrition, in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, of the Aristotle University, Greece, later was promoted to Assistant Professor, then Associated Professor and Professor. In 1996, she was a visiting researcher in Wye College, University of London, Great Britain. She teaches nutrition to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, of the Aristotle University and supervises M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Her research interests include nutrition, feed additives (probiotics, prebiotics, etc.), functional foods, aromatic plants, macro- and micro-algae, feed nutritional value and quality. She has more than 150 publications (books, research articles, reviews, presentations in congresses), with more than 1200 citations. She is reviewer and member of editorial boards in peer-reviewed journals, evaluator of scientific proposals and member of national and international scientific committees.

Prof/Dr. Javier Alcantara Carrio has received his Ph.D. in Marine Geology in the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (1999). He was lecturer at the Dept. of Marine Geosciences of the University of Vigo (1998-2002), lecturer at the Dept. of Civil Engineer of the University Alfonso X el Sabio (2002-2004), and associate professor in the Dept. of Basic Sciences and Oceanography of the Catholic University of Valencia (2004-2014). Currently, he is an associate professor of the Dept. of Physical, Chemical and Geological Oceanography of the Oceanographic Institute, University of Sao Paulo. He has supervised two Ph.D. theses and ten master theses. He has successfully completed his administrative responsibilities as Secretary of the School of Sciences of the Catholic University of Valencia (2004-2014) and as Coordinator of the Latin-American Network in Remote Sensing Applied to Coastal Hazards (2007-2010) promoted by the Latin-American Program of Science and Technology for the Development. He has participated in more than 50 research projects in Spain (Canary Islands, Galicia Rias, Cantabrian Sea and Western Mediterranean), Cuba, Colombia (San Andres Island, Caribbean and Pacific continental coast) and Brazil, among other regions. Dr. Avila finished her PhD in Animal Biology in 1993. She has been awarded many fellowships (pre- and post-doctoral) at national and international level during her research career (ca. 25 years). She was also awarded a Marie Curie TMR and a Ramon y Cajal contract while at the CSIC. Furthermore, she has presented more than 135 communications in congresses and symposia, being Chair person in two cases. She has given 15 conferences at national and international level. Biography :

Antonio Trincone is currently a Senior Researcher working since 1983 in Naples at the Istituto di Chimica Biomolecolare (I.C.B.) belonging to Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy. He graduated with honors in Pharmacy at the University of Naples discussing a thesis on biogenesis of membrane lipids of archaebacteria. He has been Professor of Organic Chemistry in charge for several years at University of Salerno, Italy. Antonio Trincone has been elected as researcher-representative at the I.C.B. first in the Comitato di Istituto and, on January 2009, in the Consiglio di Istituto. Antonio Trincone is author of more than 100 scientific publications (articles, reviews, book contributions) appeared in international leading scientific journals.

Born in 1966, since 1994 Dr. Gabriella Caruso is a Researcher at the Institute for Coastal Marine Environment (IAMC)-National Research Council (CNR), Messina (Italy). Graduated in Biological Sciences at the University of Messina (1988), holder of a CNR research grant (1989-1991) “Research of microorganisms through immunofluorescence and citofluorimetry”, she has become a Specialist in Applied Microbiology at the University of Messina (1993). She has been a Component of the Executive Plankton Committee (from 2000 to 2001, 2002 to 2003, 2010 to 2012, 2013 to 2015) as well as of the Executive Aquaculture Committee (from 2004 to 2006) of the Italian Society for Marine Biology (SIBM). Dr. Caruso has been the supervisor of several graduate thesis at Messina University, Rapporteur of a PhD Thesis at the Université du Sud-Toulon (France) and a Member of the Teaching Commission in the PhD course "Applied Hygiene" held at the Dept. of Hygiene of the University of Messina (2006-2011).
