Biography :

His professional career has rich perspective acquired from his background as a plant breeder in the private sector followed by his research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The objective of his research program at Illinois Foundation Seeds Inc. (IFSI) was to breed dent corn inbred lines for branding by domestic and International seed companies. He developed several maize inbreds that established a significant market presence, the most notable being FR1064. FR1064 is a mid-season stiff stalk inbred that was used in dent corn hybrids worldwide by over 100 seed companies. At its peak, the FR1064 hybrids constituted approximately 8% of the total U.S. cornacreage in the late 1990s. Interestingly, one of these hybrids was known among farmers as them ‘white corn hybrid’, resulting from both parents FR1064 and LH185 having a white cob, it is rare to have a white cob commercial dent corn hybrid, thus it was readily phenotypically identifiable across branded hybrids by farmers! It is extremely rewarding to develop germplasm that is widely produced in farmers’ fields. Later in his career at IFSI, he became involved in biotechnology trait efficacy evaluation, acquisition,germplasm conversion, as well as applications of molecular markers in plant breeding. At IFSI he was able to setup and manage a productive breeding program. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), he acquired additional knowledge in applications of genomics to support and enhance his plant breeding endeavors. His research as Associate Director of the Biotechnology Center has been enlightening for me, and he enjoyed being in the midst of numerous enabling genomic technologies that are rapidly emerging and evolving. I primarily oversee the personnel, major projects, and instrumentation of our seven core research labs. His adjunct appointment in the department of Crop Sciences at UIUC provides opportunities for collaboration with faculty.

Biography :

Dr. Daniel Keathley is a Professor of Horticulture at Michigan State University. He holds a B.Sc. with Distinction and an M.Sc. in Forestry, as well as a Ph.D. in Genetics from The Ohio State University. He joined the faculty at MSU in 1981. He has served in leadership roles for numerous professional societies and both industry and governmental advisory boards and teaches and undergraduate course titled: Applied Plant Physiology. His research area spans molecular genetics and conventional breeding. Recent research has included studies of transcriptome profiles to elucidate the genetic mechanisms that control the annual growth cycle in woody plants, evaluation of cold hardiness in blueberry, development of seed orchards for genetically improved Christmas tree genotypes, identification of genotypes of woody perennials for biofuel production, and the modification of gene expression to increase wood density and growth rates in biofuel species through tissue specific upregulation of genes for cellulose synthase and GA for the development of sustainable bioenergy systems.

Romaine Ramananarivo is Full Professor (Professeur Titulaire) at Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Agronomiques of Antananarivo’s University. She was the first Responsible of the PhD training in Agro-Management (November 2002 to December 2014). Since November 2013, she is the Head of Laboratory “Agro-Management, Territories and sustainable Developpment”. She was Chairman of the independent steering Committee of Competitive Funds for Applied Research / Project of Support for Rural Development (FCRA/PSDR) (2004-2012). In the private area, she was the Deputy Manager of ISCAM (Institut Supérieur de la Communication, des Affaires et du Management (November 2007-December 2013). Since November 2013, she is the General Manager of ESMIA (Ecole Supérieure de Management et d’Informatique Appliquée). She is member of International Society for Horticultural Science and is reviewer of international journal ARJ, chairman in any international scientific events.

Stoyka Masheva is a professor PhD in scientific department ”Technologies in vegetable production” in the Maritsa Vegetable Crops Institute - Plovdiv, Bulgaria. She has defended a PhD degree in soil microbiology at the Soil Science Institute, Sofia. Academic rank is associate professor and professor in science subject Plant Protection (phytopathology). Lusike Wasilwa holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Agriculture from University of Eastern Africa, Baraton; Master of Science (MSc) in Horticulture and doctorate (Ph.D.) in Plant Science from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, US; and a post doctorate from Rutgers University, New Jersey. Dr. Wasilwa has received several career building awards beginning in University of Eastern Africa where she was placed in the Dean’s List of Excellence. She has research experience of over 25 years and has authored or co-authored several publications, scientific articles and technical papers in a wide spectrum of subject matter with emphasis in horticulture, molecular plant pathology and horticulture product value chains.
Lusike works for Kenya Agriculture Research Institute at the headquarters in Nairobi as the Assistant Director in charge of Horticulture and Industrial Crops Research.
She is the Chair of the Southern and Eastern Cotton Forum (SEACF) and serves on the advisory board for the African Journal for Horticultural Science; Pest Control Products Board, Kenya National Accreditation Service (KENAS) Board, Institute for People, Innovation and Change n Organizations (PICO), USTADI and the Kenya Agricultural Productivity and Agribusiness Programme (KAPAP) grants advisory and approval committee. Dr. Wasilwa served on the Kenya Agricultural Productivity Programme (KAPP) and the Commission for Higher Education (CHE) grants advisory and approval committees.
In 2006, she received a fellowship from Gender and Diversity Rockefeller Fellowship Programme to enhance the careers of women crop scientists in East Africa. In 2010, she was recognized by the African Women in Agriculture Research Development (AWARD) for her dedication and commitment to excellence in mentoring from 2008 to 2010.

Prof. Khan started his service career as university Lecturer in 1986 in the Institute of Horticultural Sciences. Brilliant he was, he rapidly rose by dint of hard work to the enviable position of full professor in 2006. As a teacher he taught at all levels. He has produced large number of M. Sc. / PhD students as major supervisor and also served as thesis dissertation committee member for different departments. He has established “Citrus Nursery Sanitation Laboratory.”, ever first in the country, at the Institute of Horticultural Sciences, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Further, he has developed certified Citrus Foundation Trees to provide basis for high quality virus free citrus plants for the stake holders. Professor Khan is also honored to act as research coordinator for Australian (ASLP) citrus project at Faisalabad campus. He has published enormously in national and international refereed journals having good Impact Factor. His current Impact Factor is more than 7.0. His scientific publications have been very well recognized and cited by 25 international scientists. Furthermore, he has published books entitles, 1. Citrus Nursery Raising: Principles and Practices, 2. Citrus Gene-pool of Pakistan. He has served the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad as an elected member of Syndicate, the Governing Body at levels of Assistant and Associate professor for six years. Prof. Khan is a much sought after scientist and has represented Pakistan in numerous international conferences. Through sheer dedication, love of the profession, initiative, drive and nothing less than a missionary zeal, he has carved himself a position of international eminence among the leading horticulturist at national and international horizons. It would not be out of place to mention here that he remained member of various scientific societies including, American Society for Horticultural Sciences and International Seed Science Society. Further, he is an invited reviewer to evaluate scientific articles for publication in journals of international repute. In recognition of Prof. Khan’s academic as well as developmental achievements in the area of agricultural sciences, I recommend him for the award of PAS Gold Medal. Dr. M. Mumtaz Khan has more than 25 years of academic experience. His expertise is in production horticulture with special interests in crop water relationship (biotic stress mechanism), deficit irrigation, waste water use in agriculture and sustainable greenhouse vegetable production. Before joining SQU he has taken several academic assignments at national and international levels. Dr Khan has published in peer review journals, book chapters and books on production horticulture. He was successful in securing research funds and served as coordinator in an Australian research project. He remained member of various scientific societies.

Dr. Francis Appiah teaches at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana. He holds a PhD degree from KNUST. His research cut across fields including Horticulture, Food Science, Postharvest Technology and Systems, Nutrition and Community Education. He is the Vice President of the Ghana Institute of Horticulturists and a member of the Quality and Postharvest Horticulture Commission of the International Society of Horticultural Science (ISHS). Francis has 22 scientific publications in reputable international journals and is a reviewer for 12 scientific journals. He is an experienced consultant in the food industry. He has convened several scientific conferences in horticulture including the 13th Scientific Conference of the Ghana institute of Horticulturists (PROVAF 2012) in collaboration with The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Global Horticulture Initiative (GLOBALHORT) in Accra, Ghana. He has special interest in promoting scientific research and dissemination.
