Dr. Peter is currently employed as Research Professor and Director, CIMAS, University of Miami.Peter Ortner holds a Ph.D. degree in Biological Oceanography from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, a J.D. degree in Environmental Law from the University of Miami School Of Law, and a B.A. from Yale College. Peter was the Chief Scientist at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, located on Virginia Key until he retired from the federal government in November. He was a member of the team responsible for the development of the NOAA definition of an "ecosystem approach to management". He is the Director of the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies.
Peter’s research has focused primarily on biological oceanography and the development of innovative sampling technologies and analyses for larval fish and zooplankton. Peter also examines water current structure and biogeochemical distributions as they relate to the abundance, distribution and migration of plankton. Peter’s current focus is South Florida’s coastal ecosystem, future changes that may result from South Florida Ecosystem Restoration (SFER) and its interaction with Climate Change and Climate Variability. Peter has served on the RECOVER Leadership Group, the science arm of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, and upon the Science Coordination Working Group of the SFER Task Force. He was also a founder and long term chair of the Florida Bay and Adjacent Marine Systems Science Program.

Biography :

Dr. Yimin Ye is a Senior Fishery Resources Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. In this role he is leading the FAO assessment program of global marine fishery resources and responsible for a diverse range of fishery assessment, management and policy programs in a large number of countries around the world. He completed his PhD in fishery assessment and management at Imperial College, UK and worked with Shanghai Ocean University, China, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Australia. He has published about 60 peer-reviewed papers, and the most recent are “The global overview of marine fishery resources” and “Rebuilding global fisheries: the World Summit Goal, costs and benefits”.

Biography :

Dr Bricknell comes from North London, in the United Kingdom. Ian initially trained as a medical microbiologist working for the Public Health Laboratory Service, where he received extensive training in human immunology and parasitology. In 1983 he went up to university to read zoology and geology at the University of Reading, under the tutelage of the late Dr L.B. Halstead, graduating with first class honors from there in 1986. During this time he was elected president of the Zoological Society of Reading University and published the first of his 100+ research papers on the diseases of fossil elephants. From Reading University Dr Bricknell moved to Lancaster University to read for his Ph.D. Here he studied under Prof. W.T.W Potts researching the impact of acid rain on the biology of upland rivers gaining his Ph.D. in 1990. In 1991 he was awarded the Modern Geology Young Geologist of the Year Award for his work on wooly mammoths at the annual British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting.
In 1989 Dr Bricknell was offered the position of Higher Scientist at Fisheries Research Services (FRS) in Aberdeen in the fish immunology group with Dr A.E. Ellis as his mentor. Here he worked in the field of fish health developing fish vaccines and new and improved diagnostic methods for the detection of disease in wild and farmed fish. During his first three years at FRS he filed two patents on fish vaccination and improved diagnostic tests on behalf of the Secretary of State for Scotland. In 1993 Dr Bricknell was promoted to Senior Scientist and in 1999 to Principal Scientist, becoming head of the Immunodiagnostics Department. Ultimately serving on many national and international committees and councils. Including being elected to the Chair of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea’s Mariculture committee  (term of Office 2005-2008) and received the ICES presidential Service Award in 2008, he has also served on the Norwegian Research Council’s Aquatic Sciences Committee.
In 2007 Dr Bricknell accepted the post of Libra Professor of Aquaculture Biology at the University of Maine and in 2009 was appointed as the first Director of the Aquaculture Research Institute. Since arriving in the USA he has established a new aquatic animal disease research group. He has expanded his research interests to include lobster health and he is committed to helping the working waterfront in Maine to ensure a sustainable and dynamic aquaculture industry in Maine.
Ian lives in Hampden, Maine, with his wife Sue, an old greyhound called Jack, a much younger collie cross called Keira, three cats and a lot of books.

Ian Bricknell  joined SMS from his position as Group Leader, Immunological Diagnostics in the Fisheries Research Service Laboratory, Aberdeen, Scotland. He works on the developmental immunity of larval fishes and with host-pathogen interactions. His interests include: the interaction of parasites with their host and the mechanisms they employ to avoid the host's defence mechanisms; immunological detection of fish diseases; the development of the immune system of larval fishes and the onset of immunocompetence; and, the mechanisms that larval fish use to contain or resist infection.

Dr. Bokuniewicz is a professor of oceanography at the Marine Sciences Research Center, Stony Brook University and also serves as Director of the University’s Long Island Groundwater Research Institute.  He holds his doctorate from Yale University and is an internationally recognized expert on coastal processes, estuarine sedimentation, costal groundwater hydrology and dredging studies.  In addition to chairing a panel on barrier-island breaching for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, he also currently is a member of the National Parks Service Science Board on Jamaica Bay, as well as serving on international committees for the Scientific Council for Oceanic Research, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, and the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans.

Dr. Dickson is currently a Professor in the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University and the Professor in Charge of the Iowa State Component of the Food Safety Consortium. Dr. Dicksons research focuses on the control of bacteria of public health significance in foods of animal origin. He has a courtesy appointment with the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. Prior to his appointment at Iowa State University in 1993, he was employed by USDA-ARS as a Research Food Technologist and lead scientist of the Meat Safety Assurance Program, located at the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center, NE. Dr. Dickson was employed in the food industry for three years before joining USDA-ARS. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology, and is a Past President of the International Association for Food Protection. He is also active in the American Society for Microbiology and the Institute of Food Technologists.

Research Interest :

General research interest is the microbiological safety of foods of animal origins. Within that area, research interests focus on the growth and physiological activity of bacteria of public health concern, especially the Gram negative bacteria, as they are affected by animal production practices, food processing methods and storage. Predictive microbiology, which includes the development of computer models to estimate bacterial growth under specific conditions, is used as a method of studying this growth and activity. I am interested in the area of I currently participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team which follows salmonellae from animal production to processing. Additional research has been conducted on bacterial attachment to food and food contact surfaces, and in characterizing this attachment and determining the mechanisms responsible for both phases of attachment. In the Fall odf 2009, I took a 6 month faculty improvement leave to focus on risk assessment. I have participated as a team member in the development of three risk assessments, and served as a reviewer for 6 additional risk assessments.

Rex Dunham is being currently employed as Professor in College of Agriculture, Auburn University. Fisheries professor Rex Dunham, whose research has given the catfishindustry a premium hybrid catfish that is a cross between a female channelcatfish and a male blue catfish, has filed for provisional patents on technologyhe has developed to produce hybrid catfish embryos by spawning channel catfishmales containing blue catfish testes with normal channel catfish females.The technology will eliminate the need for artificial fertilization to producechannel-blue hybrid catfish embryos and should make the production of hybridcatfish embryos more cost effective and practical.Rex Dunham is recognized as a world leader in his field and has been awarded $14 million for research through 77 federal, state and university grants during his time at Auburn. He came to Auburn in 1978 to work on his masters degree, which he earned in 1979 followed by Ph.D. in 1981. He has published 223 scientific articles, chapters and proceedings papers. Dunhams major research achievements include:

* First researcher to demonstrate that selection works for the genetic improvement of channel catfish;

* First release of genetically improved fish in the United States. In total, responsible for four releases of genetically improved catfish;

* His research has led to the formation of the first four commercial genetics and breeding companies in the catfish industry; and

* First to produce a transgenic fish in the United States, and the fourth worldwide.

The applicant, Dr. Ming Z. Fan, is an expert in Nutritional Ecology with significant contributions to the understanding how nutrients link agri-food production systems, their interactions with human health, environment sustainability and societal issues at the local, national and global levels by using integrative biology, cellular and molecular, microbial metagenomic analysis and meta-data analysis research tools and through conducting effective collaborative research.  His appointment at the University of Guelph has a time commitment of 60% research, 25% teaching and 15% administrative and academic services on campus and external scientific societies and communities.  His research emphasizes on: (i) modulation of efficiency of nutrient utilization for sustainable development; and (ii) study of basic animal biology for improving human nutrition and health with the pig model.  Ming obtained his Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition in 1994 from the University of Alberta.  He conducted his post-doctoral research training at the University of Alberta and Purdue University (1994-1997).  He then continued his post-doctoral training in at Baylor College of Medicine (1997-1998).  Ming joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science at the University of Guelph in November 1998, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2003 and Professor in 2009. His research has been supported by NSERC, AAFC, OMAFRA and industrial sponsors.  Dr. Fan has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 6 book chapters, 56 conference papers, 165 abstracts in peer-reviewed journals, 85 extension articles as well as giving numerous invited presentations with listing some of the published research papers below in demonstrating experiences of conducting and collaborating large-scale environmental related research projects.

Saeb EL-Sukhon is the professor of microbiology and infectious diseases at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Jordan University of Science & Technology. He has been engaged in the academic responsibilities since 1976. Over these long years, he was involved in different academic tasks in in Iraqi and Jordanian universities.  Before that, he spent about two years in Kuwait where he established a Vet. Diag. Lab.   Professor EL-Sukhon holds the BVSc. degree from Cairo Uni., Egypt (1971) and the Ph.D. degree from the Tieraerztliche Hochschule, Hannover, Germany (1974). He published several articles in reputed peer-reviewed and specialized journals in the fields of microbiology/infectious diseases and relevant disciplines. Besides, he supervised several MSc. students and participated in many regional/international conferences and meetings, including the activities of the ad hoc group for veterinary education of the OiE. His research interests lie mainly in bacterial virulence and antibiotics. He carried out academic and administrative responsibilities either as a Head Dept. (1988-2004) and/or as the dean of the Fac. Vet. Med., Jordan (2006-2009), through which he was able to prepare that faculty to obtain the membership of the European Association of Establishment of Veterinary Education (EAEVE). In his spare time, EL-Sukhon can be found playing and listening music, practicing some sport activities.

Associate Professor with Aggregation since 2007 in the Veterinary Science Department, with a PhD in the Scientific Area of Animal Science – Microbiology (2000); Graduated in Engineering Animal Science (1988).
Currently is a researcher in the field of microbiology, phylogenetic diversity and resistance to antimicrobial agents, particularly in the field of molecular biology (PCR, genetic typing, identification by sequencing, 16S rRNA and housekeeping genes). She has also experience in identification and resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics, conduction of research studies in public health (environmental health/food safety).  Recently she is dedicated to the study of the effect of natural compounds (phytochemicals) on bacteria (human and /or animal).  She is a full member of several international and national scientific projects and Project leader in several partnerships with private companies, such as Alltech, developing studies on in vitro evaluations of the antibacterial activities. She as experience in supervising students for the final course reports (54), for the masters (20), PhD (8) and Pos-Doc supervisions (2).

I earned my B.S. at Central Michigan University (Natural Resources 1999), my M.S. at the University of Guelph (Zoology 2002), and my Ph.D. at Oregon State University (Fisheries 2011).  I worked as a Fisheries Research Assistant at Central Michigan University in 1999, and as a smolt monitoring biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) during 2002 – 2004 before becoming a Project Leader (Faculty Research Assistant) at Oregon State University (2004 – 2005; 2009 – 2012).  In this position, I estimated survival and emigration rates of salmon smolts (Oncorhynchus spp.).  I also conducted research on the anadromous Pacific lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus), including migration biology and habitat use of adults, followed by surveys of the abundance and habitat use of larvae.  Currently I am the Project Leader of the Fish Life History Analysis at the ODFW (2012 – present), where I work on age estimates and life history identification of salmonids.
My research outlook is to let the research problem define the way that I approach the science, and I frequently take part in multi-disciplinary collaborations with other biologists to increase the aptitude at which I and my team can attain our research goals.  I use controlled laboratory experiments, field monitoring and field-based experiments to address the research foci listed above.
To date, my research and monitoring experience has focused on freshwater and anadromous fishes.  My research has spanned the Laurentian Great Lakes (e.g., Clemens and Crawford 2009, Rev. Fish. Sci.), the Columbia River estuary (e.g., Clemens et al. 2009, Trans. Am. Fish. Soc.; Welch et al. 2008 PLoS Biol.) and Columbia River Basin (Ward et al. 2012, Fisheries); and the Willamette River Basin and Pacific Northwest (e.g., Clemens 2011, Ph.D. diss; Clemens et al. 2012; Env. Biol. Fish.; Clemens et al. 2012 tech. report to the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission) and North America (Clemens et al. 2010, Fisheries).  As such, I consider myself an organismal biologist focusing on landscape ecology.  I use holistic and comparative approaches among similar taxa to pin-point biological similarities and differences, and then ask “Why?” (e.g., Clemens et al. 2010, Fisheries).  I synthesize across biological disciplines to focus on patterns and pose parsimonious hypotheses that cut to the heart of the problem (e.g., Clemens and Crawford, 2009, Rev. Fish. Sci.).  I believe that these holistic and synthesis-driven approaches are integral to uncovering the biology of poorly understood animals while simultaneously seeking biological patterns that may apply across taxa.
