Biography :

Dr. Bryan received his B.S. in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry from Stephen F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches, Texas) in 1999, M.S. in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University (College Station, Texas) in 2003, and Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from Texas A&M Health Sciences Center in 2005.  He performed his postdoctoral research in the lab of Dr. Patricia D’Amore at Harvard Medical School in the Schepen’s Eye Research Institute (Boston, MA) from 2005 to 2008.  He was recruited to Worcester State University (Worcester, MA) as an assistant professor of Biology from 2008-2011 where he taught undergraduate and graduate biology and biotechnology courses and was awarded the university’s first grant from the National Institutes of Health.  In 2011 Dr. Bryan moved his lab to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso Texas where he is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine.  Dr. Bryan’s laboratory has been awarded grants from the National Institutes of Health, Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, I. Aisiku, and multiple seed grants.  Dr. Bryan is a member of the North American Vascular Biology Association, the American Society for Cell Biology, and the American Association of Cancer Researchers and has presented his work at numerous national and international venues.  He has served as a scientific textbook and manuscript reviewer for multiple prestigious publishing companies, a grant editor for the National Institutes of Health and the Scientific Committee of the Association Francaise contre les Myopathies, and as a consultant for several pre-clinical drug development studies in private industry.

Research Interest :

The research in the Bryan lab is focused on the subcellular mechanics and cellular signaling involved in the formation of the cardiovascular system.  We are particularly interested in how these pathways are deregulated in aberrant vascular states such as hemangiomas, vascular malformations, and cancer.  Insights gained from this work can lead to a better understanding of the cause and treatment of vascular disease and cancer. To achieve these goals, we are developing novel experimental techniques to (1) elucidate the mechanisms by which cell shape and mechanical stress affect gene expression, (2) identify the genetic and epigenetic components controlling hemangioma and vascular malformation progression, and (3) develop advanced therapeutics against a variety of vascular tumors including hemangioendotheliomas and angiosarcomas.

Biography :

Matthias Clauss received his Ph.D. 1988 from the Ruprecht-Karls-University, Heidelberg, Germany. He his Postdoctoral Fellowship with Dr. David Stern, Columbia University, New York City, where he discovered novel endothelial cell activating proteins such as EMAP II. His interest in angiogenesis made Dr. Clauss join Dr. Werner Risau 1992 at the Max-Planck-Institute in Germany, where he addressed the role of inflammation in blood vessel grow and repair. Since 2003 Dr. Clauss is a member of the Indiana Center for Vascular Biology and Medicine and Associate Research Professor for Cellular & Integrative Physiology and Microbiology & Immunology. He has published over 60 peer reviewed research articles and his editor of the book “Mechanisms of angiogenesis”.

Matthias Clauss studies the balance of angiogenesis in repair with focus on the pro-angiogenic vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the  anti-angiogenic endothelial monocyte-activating polypeptide II (EMAP II), their receptors and cell signaling. He also studies the role of adult stem cells in tissue repair and how inflammation can cause cellular senescence of these cells. Furthermore, Dr. Clauss and his team analyze mechanisms leading to cardiovascular complications in the HIV positive population with focus on the intracellular HIV-Nef protein.

Biography :

After receiving both his MD and PhD from the J.W. Goethe Medical School in Germany, Dr. Dickfeld was a resident in cardiovascular diseases at the Technical University of Munich, German Heart Institute. Following this, he came to Duke University Hospital, where he completed his residency in internal medicine. Most recently, Dr. Dickfeld completed both a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases and electrophysiology at Johns Hopkins University. The focus of Dr. Dickfeld’s clinical practice is cardiac electrophysiology, including radiofrequency ablation therapy for atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia; implantable cardioverter- defibrillator and pacemaker implantation; and medical management of cardiac arrhythmias. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, with subspecialty certifications in clinical cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Dickfeld’s research focus is in the field of cardiac arrhythmias. He has published more than 100 articles, book chapters and abstracts. His research has appeared in prestigious journals such as Cell, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Heart Rhythm. He currently serves as a reviewer for several medical journals such as Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm and Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology and is an active member in a variety of professional societies.

Biography :

Dr. Fishbein is a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Pediatrics of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Fishbein received his MD degree from the Saratov University (in Russia) in 1987, and his PhD degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (in Israel) in 2001. Dr. Fishbein completed his post-doctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Levy at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 2005. He was then appointed a research assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. His research interests over the past 5 years have been focused on localized vascular gene delivery and gene therapy of post-angioplasty restenosis. His current work continues exploring the concept of stents as delivery platforms for local vascular gene therapy. He also investigates magnetic field-facilitated targeting of magnetic nanoparticles to magnetizable stents as a novel paradigm of stent reloading with drugs and gene vectors. Additional scientific interests of Dr. Fishbein lie in the areas of genetically modified monocytes as delivery vehicles for atherosclerotic and angioplastied arteries and ROS-related mechanisms of restenosis. Currently Dr. Fishbein is funded by the grants from the NIH and the University of Pennsylvania research funds.

Randall W. William W. Li is President, Medical Director, and Co-founder of the Angiogenesis Foundation. Will trained in the lab of Dr. Judah Folkman, pioneer of the angiogenesis field, and has been actively engaged in angiogenesis research and clinical development for 22 years. Under Will’s leadership, the Foundation has developed a unique social enterprise model based on international collaborations with leading medical academic centers, biopharmaceutical companies, and government agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, and the Food and Drug Administration. As President, Will has testified and presented before congressional and other government panels on the impact of angiogenesis in healthcare, and lectures widely on angiogenesis-related topics in front of clinical, government, and industry audiences. He is involved in national and international efforts to advance the applications of angiogenesis-based therapeutics across diverse medical fields, including oncology/hematology, cardiology, ophthalmology, vascular surgery, dermatology, and wound care. He has been published in Science, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and other leading peer-reviewed medical journals. Will received his A.B. with honors from Harvard College, and his M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pennsylvania. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship training in General Internal Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Since the late 1990ies research efforts in our laboratory have been focused on the understanding of the functions of the Collagen Triple Helix Repeat Containing-1 (Cthrc1), a molecule discovered in our laboratory in 1999 in the adventitia of injured arteries. We recently found that Cthrc1 is a novel hormone with expression in the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland and in bone under homeostatic conditions. Cthrc1 null mice have increased levels of glycogen in skeletal muscle and liver, and these mutants develop steatosis. Our long term goals are to understand the functions of Cthrc1 in health and disease and explore whether abnormal Cthrc1 levels are linked to alter physiology or pathology.

Dr. Milos Maksimovic has received his PhD in Metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis. Currently,  he is working as Assistant Professor for Hygiene and Medical Ecology at University of Belgrade. He has authored 30 research articles. He is a member of European Atherosclerosis Society.

Biography :

Dr. John Corson was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff for the New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) in January 2010. He has been serving as the Acting Chief of Staff since May 2012. Prior to his current assignment, Dr. Corson served as Chief of Surgery in the NMVAHCS from 2004-2010. Dr. Corson was appointed in 2004 as a Professor of Surgery in the College of Medicine at the University of New Mexico.

Dr. Corson has authored and co-authored approximately 200 peer reviewed publications and fifty book chapters and made over 400 presentations related to vascular surgery. His research funding totals over 3.5 million dollars. He is the co-author of an award winning International Surgical Textbook and is a past president of the Society of Clinical Vascular Surgery, the Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society and the International College of Angiology. He has served on the editorial boards of the British Journal of Surgery, Vascular Forum, International Vascular Surgery, Postgraduate Vascular Surgery and was an associate editor of Vascular Surgery. He currently is a senior editor of the International Journal of Angiology and a reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the British Journal of Surgery.

Biography :

Giuseppe Biondi Zoccai was born in San Remo, Italy, on 25 July 1974. He obtained his MD diploma magna cum laude at the University of Milan, Italy, in 1999 with a thesis on the comparison of diagnostic accuracy of different imaging tests for Takayasu arteritis. He completed compulsory military service in 2000 as Medical Officer in the 183rd Parachute Regiment of the Italian Army in Pistoia, Italy, as well as serving as Chief Medical Officer in the Task Force Falco of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), in Dakovica, Kosovo. He then pursued specialist training in cardiovascular medicine, obtaining his Cardiologist diploma magna cum laude at the Catholic University, Rome, Italy, in 2004 with a thesis on a systematic review and meta-regression focusing on the early invasive management of acute coronary syndromes. In 2004-2005 he completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Invasive Cardiology Unit of St. Raffaele University Hospital, Milan, Italy. He later worked as consultant cardiologist in the Cardiovascular Interventions Service of St. Donato Hospital, St. Donato, Italy, and of Abano Terme Hospital, Abano Terme, Italy. Since 2006 he has served as Assistant Professor, until 2010 in the Division of Cardiology of the University of Turin, Turin, Italy, during 2011 in the Division of Cardiology of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena, Italy, and since late 2011 in the Department of Medico-Surgical Sciences and Biotechnologies of the Sapienza University of Rome, Latina, Italy, where he is currently involved in both noninvasive and invasive cardiology, as well as clinical research. During his early years, he pursued further training as visiting researcher/physician at: Hopital Hautepierre, Strasbourg, France; Aintree Hospital, Liverpool; UK, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA; and Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, USA. He has also attended doctoral courses in biomedical statistics at the Biometrics and Medical Statistics Institute of the University of Milan, Italy. Among Dr. Biondi Zoccais research interests are advanced biostatistical methods and evidence based medicine in cardiology, intracoronary stents, and the impact of inflammation in heart disease. Since 2003 he is member of the Heart Group of The Cochrane Collaboration, and in the same year he founded an international collaboration dedicated to meta-analysis and evidence-based cardiology training (METCARDIO, available online at metcardio.org). Within METCARDIO, he has been involved, as first author or coauthor, in more than 100 systematic reviews and meta-analyses, achieving with time a high degree of methodological expertise in this research field. As a whole, he has coauthored more than 420 articles published on international medical journals and indexed in MEDLINE/PubMed, as well as several book chapters and hundreds of abstracts at international congresses. His international leadership in clinical research is testified by the high h index (51 in Google Scholar), as well as his position as Editor-in-Chief of two international biomedical journals (World Journal of Meta-Analysis and International Journal of Statistics in Medical Research).

Miloslav Spacek

Miloslav Spacek

Biography :

Dr. Spacek received his MD degree from Charles University, Prague. He has a clinical background in cardiology and internal medicine and is particularly interested in non-invasive imaging methods. Recently, he became Assistant Teacher in cardiology in CardioVascular center of Motol University Hospital & 2nd Medical School of Charles University in Prague. He has received further specialization in transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) and his current research focuses on understanding intracranial flow disturbances and distal intracranial embolization during vascular procedures such as carotid artery stenting and carotid endarterectomy. He has authored or co-authored 12 research articles.
