Biography :

David is a forage specialist at Oregon State University with research, teaching, extension, and international projects responsibilities.After completing degrees at the Universities of Delaware, Tennessee, and Kentucky, and extensive international travel in the spring of 1979,  I began work at OSU and have been there for my entire professional career. Research has focused on biological nitrogen fixation of forage legumes and GIS-based ecological zoning to match species with climate and soil conditions. Extension activities have included national standards for forage quality evaluation and practical computer applications, including extensive work on the Forage Information System (http://forages.oregonstate.edu). Teaching responsibilities focus on forage and livestock systems and developing a national grasslands curriculum. International work has included USDA projects in Tunisia in the 1980s, a sabbatical leave in Avignon, France in 1999-2000, and over 25 years of working in China, with support from the USDA FAS MAP and EMP, Oregon Seed Council, and USTDA. Previous Fulbright activities included a Senior Scholar two-phase project in Banda Aceh, Indonesia to assist with tsunami recovery and develop improved capacity for applied research work at Syiah Kuala University. My current Distinguished Chair China Fulbright program will focus on developing a Chinese national curriculum for forage and livestock systems, modeling and mapping alfalfa varieties to appropriate areas in China, grassland/rangeland restoration research to match stocking rates to the biological capacity of the land, and assisting faculty and students in their publication efforts. My initial Fulbright program host will be Sichuan Agricultural University, followed by 5 months at Nanjing Agricultural University.

Biography :

Mariam Sticklen is a Professor at Michigan State University. She received her PhD at the Ohio State University before her one year of Post Doctoral Research at USDA. Then, she served as a faculty member for one year at Clemson University, four years at the Ohio Sate University and so far twenty five years at Michigan State Uiversity. Her area of expertise is; recombinant crops-based high value bio-based products including herterologous cellulases, hemicellulases, ligninases, biopharmaceuticals, and industrial and biodiesel oils. She is the editor of two books and author of over 150 refereed journal articles and book chapters. Prof. Sticklen is the recipient of the MSU’s 2009 Outstanding Woman Faculty ward, and the 2000 Ralph Smukler International Award. At present, she is the Editor-In-Chief of one and member of Editorial Board of three other refereed journals.

Biography :

Tatsuru Masuda was born in Shiga, Japan in 1965. He began his academic career as an undergraduate student at Kobe University. He received the B.S. degree in Agriculture in 1988 the M.S. degree in Agriculture in 1990 from Kobe University. He continued his study as a Ph.D. course graduate student at Kyoto University. In 1990, he became a Research Associate of Tokyo Institute of Technology, where he received his Ph.D. degree in Science in 1991. Later, he became an Assistant Professor. He also spent one and half year as a Visiting Professor of University of California, Berkeley. In 2004, he became an Associate Professor of the University of Tokyo.

Research Interest :

Prof. Masuda's research centers the regulation of Plant Genetics, photosynthetic tetrapyrrole pigments, such as chlorophylls and hemes. Because of their unique properties on photosynthesis and respiration, the strict regulation of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis in plant cells is the heart of the chloroplast biogenesis. By taking biochemical and molecular biological approaches, he discovered the existence of coordinated transcriptional system of photosynthesis-related genes that are essential for the assembly of functional photosynthetic apparatus. By modulating this transcriptional system, he established a technology to produce functional chloroplasts even in non-photosynthetic plant tissues. He also developed new methodology for extremely sensitive heme detection, which now became a standard assay in most organisms. With this method, he is studying novel aspect of heme metabolism in plant cells.

Biography :

Dr. Jessup joined the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences in 2009 as an Assistant Professor of Perennial Grass Breeding with a 70% research and 30% teaching appointment. His research focuses on developing germplasm that will be used as biofuels, turfgrasses, forages, and biorefining platforms. Dr. Jessup received his B.S. degree in Plant and Environmental Soil Science at Texas A&M University in 1997 and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Breeding in 1999 and 2005, respectively. From 2005-2007, he served as a post-doctoral research geneticist with USDA-ARS at College Station developing turfgrass genomics tools. In 2007, he accepted a position as a plant breeder with Mendel Biotechnology at Auburn, AL and was also responsible for developing public and private sector partnerships.In this position he also initiated a biomass feedstock breeding program involving Miscanthus spp., switchgrass, sorghum, and other perennial grasses.

Biography :

Mithila originally comes from India where she obtained her B.Sc and M.Sc degrees in Agriculture. She then worked as an ARS-Scientist with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for several years. She has joined KSU in 2011 to accept research and teaching responsibilities in Weed Physiology. Prior to coming to KSU she has worked for several years as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Guelph in Canada. She has also received a Ph. D. from the University of Guelph in 2004 in Weed Science. Her current research focuses toward understanding mechanisms and genetic basis of herbicide resistance in weeds such as Palmer amaranth, kocia, waterhemp and wild radish. She supervises M.Sc and Ph.D. students in weed science. She also teaches graduate and undergraduate courses related to Herbicide Interactions and Weed Physiology at KSU.

 Mithila's research interests include understanding hybrid Seed technology, herbicide interactions with plants and evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds. Specifically, investigate physiological, biochemical, genetic and molecular mechanisms that determine weed resistance to herbicides. The physiological and biochemical basis of herbicide resistance will be investigated by studying uptake/translocation as well as metabolism of herbicides. The genetic and molecular basis of herbicide resistance will be understood following classical genetic and biotechnological approaches. The knowledge learned from this research will help predict possible spread of herbicide resistance in weed populations, which is important for recommending new methods to control herbicide resistant weeds.

My research interest is to understand the molecular mechanisms that plants have evolved to cope with environmental stresses. Most of my effort has been focusing on the identification of key components in signal transduction pathways for plant responses to environmental stresses including salinity, drought, and temperature extremes, with the long term goal of developing new strategies to improve crop productivity and sustainability in agriculture and environment. We will elucidate abiotic stress tolerance mechanisms, including the roles of small RNAs and epigenetic regulation in various abiotic stress response pathways.

Jinrong Wan received his doctoral degree in Crop Science from the University of Kentucky. He is now working in the National Center for Soybean Biotechnology as a research scientist at the University of Missouri. His research mainly focuses on plant-microorganism interactions and plant signaling pathways involved in such processes. His recent work has led to the identification of the long-elusive receptor for the chitin component in fungal cell walls, which was published and highlighted in the journal Plant Cell. Nnadozie Oraguzie received his PhD in Plant breeding and genetics at Lincoln University, New Zealand and worked for a year as a Post-Doctoral researcher at Canterbury University, Christchurch, New Zealand, before joining Plant and Food Research (PFR) Institute, New Zealand as Research Scientist in 1998. At PFR, he was the Manager of the national pome fruit germplasm collection and an Objective Leader in the Pome fruit breeding consortium program. With the help of a fellowship from the Science and Technology Agency (STA) of Japan in 2001, he led an international collaboration including PFR, Hirosaki University and the National Institute of Tree Fruit Science, Morioka, Japan, that first linked an allele of the Md-ACS1 gene to fruit softening in apple. He was also the recipient of an Invitation Fellowship from the Japan Ministry of Science and Technology in 2006. He joined the faculty of Washington State University (WSU) in 2008 as Associate Professor.  He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed journal publications and a book, and currently serves on the editorial board of two journals.

Kate Evans joined Washington State University in 2008 as the pome fruit breeder based at the Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center, Wenatchee. Her principal role is leading the apple breeding program but she’s also collaborating nationally and internationally in developing a rootstock breeding program for pear. She was elected onto the US Rosaceae Genomics, Genetics and Breeding Executive Committee in 2011. Kate started working as an apple and pear breeder at East Malling Research, UK in 1992 following a degree in Plant Biology/Genetics from Leeds University, UK and a PhD in plant molecular biology from Durham University, UK. Chengsong Zhu joined the Department of Agronomy in 2013 at Iowa State University as a research Scientist. He received his BSc degree from Yangzhou University in 1990, MSc from Nanjing Agricultural University in 1995 and Ph.D. from Fudan University in 2004. Nadiya Abubakar Al-Saady completed her PhD in 2002 from the University of Minnesota, USA, in: the area of plant genetics. Later, she joined as a post-doc the Institute of Agrobiotechnology (INA) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) where she focused on epigenetic modifications that regulate gene inactivation in plants initiating chromatin immunoprecipitation (CHIP) assays in barley. After she spend 1 year in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of Democritus University of Thrace focusing on research in the field of biomolecular interactions, she joined again INA where she continues studying epigenetics. Wende Liu joined the Institute of Plant Protection (IPP), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS, Beijing, China) as an associate professor in 2011. The problems of water deficit, salt, and other abiotic stresses are exacerbated by global warming and climate change. The looming gap between water supply and demand creates a need for major advances in crop adaptation to drought and salt stresses through increased water-use efficiency and tolerance to saline soil. Our current and future research is aimed at improving our understanding of the drought, cold and heat, and salt-stress signaling pathways and resistance mechanisms.

Dr. Xingming Fan, is a scientist of maize genetics and breeding, a professor of Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (YAAS), and serve as director general of Institute of Food Crops (IFC). He received his PhD degree from Agronomy & Biological College, China Agricultural University in 2007. Fan has engaged in maize genetics and breeding more than twenty years since 1988 and has led more than 50 state and provincial major projects. He developed a succession of totally 22 new hybrids with improved yield potential, good quality, disease resistance, and broad adaptation. Biography :

Dr. Sachin Rustgi, born in 1980, is currently affiliated as Assistant Research Professor with the Department of Crop & Soil Sciences at the Washington State University, Pullman. He holds a master’s degree in Botany from M.J.P. Rohilkhand University, Bareilly (India) and a Ph.D. degree in Genetics and Plant Breeding from the C.C.S. University, Meerut (India). Immediately after graduating in 2006 he joined WSU, and since then, working there in different capacities. His research is a balance between applied and basic sciences with a focus on targeted improvement of cereals using tools of structural and functional genomics.

Major research activities include hybrid seed technology, development of natural dietary therapies for celiac patients by engineering wheat genotypes with reduced gluten content and expressing gluten-detoxifying enzymes, biomimetic engineering of wheat lines to produce an antifungal antibiotic pyrrolnitrin, systemic expression of an antimycotic enzyme endochitinase, and development of herbicide (imidazolinone) tolerant barley cultivars.

Dr. Li is currently affiliated as Assistant Research Professor with the Department of entomology at the Nanjing Agricultural University China. He has published tens of important and high-cited papers in trends in genetics, cell research, PLoS one, BMC genomics, BMC bioinformatics, BBRC, genome, insect molecular biology, insect biochemistry and molecular biology etc.

Dr. Li study on crop sciences, noncoding RNA genes (mainly microRNA) using the strategy of insect genomics and bioinformatics. He has developed several algorithms for predicting microRNA genes and other noncoding RNAs.  Hundreds of microRNAs have been found from tens of insects by using these softwares. Dr. Li is also interested in investigating the functions of microRNAs in insect larvae development and metamorphosis.  Another research topic in Dr. Li’s group is insecticide resistance. He amplified two acetylcholinesterase genes and found the mutations in one ace in cotton aphid in 2002, which was regarded as a breakthrough in insect toxicology.  Dr. Li systematically studied on the functional difference of two ace genes in rice stem borer, silkworm and diamondback moths by using RNAi technique.  Dr. Li also dedicate to developing new strategy for pest control with gene silencing.  He has published tens of important and high-cited papers in trends in genetics, cell research, PLoS one, BMC genomics, BMC bioinformatics, BBRC, genome, insect molecular biology, insect biochemistry and molecular biology, and etc.

Plant Breeding, Plant Biotechnology and Plant Genetic Resources and Ph.D. Plant Breeding, Plant Biotechnology and Plant Genetic Resources students at the Dr. Y.S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry Solan Himachal Pradesh, India during 2002 to 2009.Presently, I am associated in the teaching of following Plant Genetic Resources courses to the Post-graduate students at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India. Contributed in the formulation of two new courses (Principles of Genetics and Cytogenetics and Principles of Plant Breeding) to the undergraduate students under 4th Dean’s committee on agricultural education constituted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

Shah Fahad, currently in Huazhong Agriculture University Wuhan China doing post doctorate. His major is Agronomy and environmental physiology. He is very individualistic person who has a gift for figuring out how people who are different can work together productively. Also, because he was driven by her talents, He can constantly investigate the “how’s”, and “why’s” of a given situation which would be very beneficial to not only myself, but other people who want to work in the field of Agriculture.
This is a very competitive world, and what He believes to be the most difficult thing for him would have to His peers who are all working very hard trying to earn a degree that would later pay off in life. However, because He is a futuristic person He knows that life has a deep meaning and purpose. The reason is because His goals and aspirations motivate Him to keep moving forward, and to get something extraordinary in the field of Agronomy and environmental physiology. It’s so funny to Him, because the tension that he feel when a deadline is fast approaching forces Him to concentrate on the right activities, discard irrelevant information, and not waste time on intriguing distractions.
