Biography

He was born in Zagreb, Croatia, where he has also received his education, including Ph.D. in Biological Sciences at the University of Zagreb, 1963. He spent the two following years in Germany (Limnology Institute, University of Freiburg/Breisgau; Intitute or Experimental Research, Munich) supported by Alexander-von-Humboldt foundation. He came to the U.S. as research associate on invitation of Geology Department of Princeton University, and later taught for three years in Biology Department of Yale University, and one year at Paterson State College, NJ. During that time he held visiting professorship in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. He came to Boston University in 1970 where he has been active since, in teaching and research in the following areas: Interaction between microorganisms and carbonates, diversity of modern and ancient cyanobacteria, microbial fossils and stromatolites in modern and Proterozoic sedimentary systems. His research collaboration with German Universities was awarded by Alexander-von-Humboldt foundation’s Senior Award in 1991.
