Research Interest

Drug metabolizing enzymes regulate metabolism of drugs and toxins, and are critical to the survival of mammalian species. Alterations of these enzymes can lead to impaired metabolism of drugs, leading to adverse drug reactions which can have deleterious consequences in terms of human health. Our long-term goal is to increase the efficacy and safety of drugs by characterization of these enzymes at a molecular level. Our current research focuses on investigating the role of inflammation, infectious diseases and obesity on drug metabolizing enzymes and pharmacokinetics and hepatotoxicity of candidate drugs. Biochemical assays, molecular biology techniques and transgenic animal models are utilized in our studies. The knowledge gained from these studies will have significant impact on developing novel strategies to maximize therapeutic efficacy of drugs and reduce incidences of drug-induced liver disease.
