Biography

Dr. Jianhua Zhu earned his PhD degree in Plant Molecular Biology from Purdue University in 2004. Dr. Zhu conducted his postdoctoral research work in the University of California- Riverside under the supervision of professor Jian-Kang Zhu. Dr. Zhu is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture, University of Maryland, College Park. Salinity, drought, and temperature extremes (low and high) are common environmental abiotic stress conditions that ultimately determine the distribution of land plants and adversely affect the agricultural productivity of crops worldwide. Dr. Zhu’s research interest is to understand the molecular mechanisms that plants have evolved to cope with environmental stresses.

Research Interest

Crop productivity, Salinity, drought, and temperature extremes (low and high) are common environmental abiotic stress conditions that ultimately determine the distribution of land plants and adversely affect the agricultural productivity of crops worldwide. My research interest is to understand the molecular mechanisms that plants have evolved to cope with environmental stresses. Most of my effort has been focusing on the identification of key components in signal transduction pathways for plant responses to environmental stresses including salinity, drought, and temperature extremes, with the long term goal of developing new strategies to improve crop productivity and sustainability in agriculture and environment. We will elucidate abiotic stress tolerance mechanisms, including the roles of small RNAs and epigenetic regulation in various abiotic stress response pathways.
