Biography

Ana Luisa Miranda-Vilela majored in Biological Sciences, received her Master’s degree in Microbiology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUCMG - 1983) in Belo Horizonte and her PhD degree in Animal Biology at the University of Brasilia (UnB) in Brasília, Brazil, where she was an alternate member of the Ethics Committee on Animal Use (CEUA/UnB). Her education also includes specializations in Biology of Vertebrates (PUCMG - 1986) and in Human Genetics (UnB - 2004). As a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Brasilia, she worked with nanomaterials and antioxidants in the treatment of breast tumor in Swiss mice. Currently, she is a collaborating researcher of the University of Brasília. In this role, she works in partnership with the Hematology and Hemotherapy Unit of the Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal, to carry out studies involving the influence of genetic polymorphisms (1) on the diagnosis and prognosis of thrombotic events, (2) associated with the occurrence of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), and (3) on oxidative stress and predisposition to infections in patients with secondary iron overload. This partnership also extended to studies of genotyping erythrocyte blood groups in multitransfused patients  being treated in public hospitals of the Brazilian Federal District. In the last 3 years, she has published many papers in National and International Journals in the fields of human genetic polymorphisms in association with athletic performance, health and diseases, based on allele/genotypic frequencies by themselves or in association with biochemical parameters and clinical data, besides having other papers still in the writing process. Her research expertise includes Human and Medical Genetics, Molecular markers of oxidative stress, Genetic Toxicology, Genetics of Microorganisms, Nanobiotechnology, Nutrigenomics, Human Physiology, Oxidative stress and antioxidants. As a teacher, she worked for over 14 years in Senior High Schools in all areas of biology, especially Human Genetics, Comparative Physiology, Zoology, Botany, Histology and Cytology.
